America is a violent country, and despite some extraordinary gains in cities like New York, Chicago, and others, hot spots of persistent and widespread violence remain in Oakland, Detroit, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans and other cities. Last night a fifteen year-old boy, Derrick Mixon, was shot to death in Oakland. Whatever he did to provoke his killers, he surely didn't deserve death. He was the 72nd recorded homicide of 2008 in this relatively small city--here is a map of the homicides; notice the geographic concentration. Here is San Francisco's map; notice the geographic concentration.
