Looks and books

Virginia Postrel asks if the physically unattractive Eudora Welty would get published today, as author's appearances in magazines and TV increasingly influence sales. Yes, she says, but there's more to it than that.

Two separate phenomena. I read books, and I am also intrigued by Zadie Smith because she's good-looking. But I don't care about her looks when I buy or read the book (which incidentally I couldn't really get into). Certainly it's an edge, because it's one more way to get attention, but I suspect that being super whack-looking (sorry, but it's true) is just as much of an edge for Garrison Keillor.
